Description
Summary:A well-established interpretive trend in Arabic genealogy and historiography is subgrouping Arabs into the descent of ‘Adnān and that of Qaḥṭān. In Andalusi historiography some socio-political conflicts are ultimately accounted for as a consequence of this traditional genealogical distinction. This study investigates the transmission and circulation of lexicographical knowledge concerning the terminological pair ‘Adnān/Qaḥṭān from Middle East to al-Andalus. In particular it investigates both linguistic descriptions and cultural representations associated with this terminological pair in time and space, focusing on Classical lexicographical sources from the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq and al-Andalus. These sources mainly amount to a chain of discipleship ending with the Andalusi lexicographer Ibn Sīda (d. 1066)
