Summary: | The Islamic art can be distinguished from all the others for its decorative geometrical patterns, leaded by the Muslim craftsmen at the ultimate point of refinement. The paper examines the religious-intellectual structure which leads Muslim artists to the development of geometrical decorations, in the attempt to prove how the Islamic conception of art is strictly linked to the Platonic doctrines. Indeed, the Islamic ban of imitative depictions is very akin to the platonic one: thanks to the Islamic philosophers, the Pythagorean and Platonic view of the Cosmos has been implemented by the Islamic knowledge, and the art of the patterns can be defined as a concrete realization of a sacred, platonic art. |
