Summary: | This study explores experiences of sexuality and daily social activities expressed by Brazilian women who explicitly identified as Protestant. Data were collected between August 2010 and October 2011, through in-depth face-to-face interviews with 32 adult Brazilian Protestant women, 12 from Traditional, 10 from Pentecostal, and 10 from Neo-Pentecostal denominations, and thematic analysis was performed. Four descriptive categories were elaborated: (a) Exemplary behavior is essential to marry a good husband; (b) The submissive attitude of the wife is essential for the harmony of the family; (c) Children should be born only when the family has good financial stability; and (d) Distinct positions exist toward abortion. The expression of Protestant women ́s sexuality is influenced by the desire to marry and constitute a harmonious family with financial stability, and their positions towards abortion were distinct. Religious principles are followed in terms of personal and family life course, but personal positions have predominated in decisions toward abortion. The importance of individualized approaches and systematized care when religiosity and sexuality are involved was reinforced. |
