Summary: | The emergence of a new spiritual marketplace has resulted in uncertainty about the meaning of the term spirituality as its usage extends from traditional religious beliefs/ practices to include spiritual seeking associated with less traditional forms of relating to the sacred. both types of spirituality share in common a quest for meaning via the sacred. however, whereas traditional spirituality emphasizes an external source of authority, non-traditional spirituality prioritizes the self and inner experiences and a belief in an impersonal life force. at its best, traditional spirituality promotes trust in existing social order and fosters communal ties and at its worse results in dogmatism. Non-traditional spirituality encourages openness, tolerance, and a concern for global causes but at its worse reflects narcissistic self-absorption. |
