Description
Summary:At the end of the 19th century the first temperance societies were founded in provinces of Vidzeme and Kurzeme. Their activities were focused on the fight against the use of alcoholic beverages publicly, in order to raise the educational and cultural levels of society. The most active members of the temperance movement were those societies which based their actions and statements on Biblical values - Evangelical temperance societies. They spread the Gospel and fought the causes and consequences of alcoholism. The article analyzes the main principles and actions of Evangelical temperance societies, and differences between various temperance groups. Evangelical temperance societies organized spiritual meetings and lectures, they published temperance literature. Unlike most of the temperance societies in Vidzeme and Kurzeme, Evangelical temperance societies first of all drew attention to the individual's drinking behavior as a sin based on individual choice, rather than influence of the outside social forces.
