Summary: | This paper will examine the Rama ethos as applied to the downtrodden and neglected sectors of society. It will be demonstrated that Tulasidasa used the Divine Figure of Sri Rama to effect social transformation and construct new paradigms in a positive, pro-active manner. One of the ways employed by him was to see God in everything (Siya Ramamaya saba jaga jani) in order to change people's attitudes towards one another. He thus succeeded in elevating all regardless of birth, social and economic status or domicile, to the same level through devotion to Sri Rama (Kaha Raghupati sunu bhamini bata, manau ek bhagati kara nata). The Ramacaritamanasa permeated all parts of society and its influence persisted through the centuries. Today humanity everywhere finds guidance and solace from this immortal work. |
