Summary: | The Flemish movement in Belgium strove for the promotion of Dutch to a position equal to that of French in Belgium. During World War I the Germans took advantage of this movement and developed it into a political instrument against the Belgian state. The Flemish who went along with this called themselves "activists." The Catholics among them had joined because they feared, among other things, that if the Allied forces were to gain a victory, free thinking would occupy a dominant role in Belgium. This specter was to be averted by a greater independence for Flanders, where there was a Catholic majority. This vision also appealed to many Catholic priests. In this they found themselves opposed by Cardinal Mercier, who symbolized the indomitability of Belgian resistance against the Germans. |
