| Summary: | In the past 25 years the religious history of the early modern age has been the object of a great deal of interest in Belgium. As far as the 16th century was concerned, more attention was paid to the study of the Reformation than to that of the early Counter-Reformation. Most historians studied the 17th and 18th centuries in the Spanish and the Austrian Low Countries. In accordance with the trends in general history abroad and at home, the ecclesiastical-religious life of the common man and woman was studied. The French authors Gabriel Le Bras and Jean Delumeau have greatly influenced Belgian historiography. Since the 1980's, interest has shifted from church practice to religious mentality. Visitation reports of deans and bishops and books of sermons are conspicuous as new scholarly sources. Also, Jansenism, post-Jansenism, and the history of the theological faculty were given much attention. Church-state relations were studied mainly in connection with the 18th century. Monasticism is now more an object of interest than some years ago. Church history of the early modern age is now mainly practiced at the Catholic University of Leuven. It remains to be seen whether the increasing religious indifference will have a negative effect on the practice of church historiography in years to come. |
