Summary: | In 1953 a number of Dutch priests, including Cardinal J. Willebrands and theologian P. Schoonenberg, offered their bishops a concept for a pastoral letter "Concerning Christian Hope." In this document, which was clearly intended as both a retrospective and an outlook on the future on the occasion of the celebration of the restoration of the Episcopal hierarchy, 1853-1953, they focused on the religious life of Dutch Catholics as such. The contents of this concept are placed in the context of the theological thought of the day. The priests involved turned out to be inspired by the New Theology, concerning, among other things, the position of the layman in the church. In the choice and treatment of the various subjects they definitely based their message on the religious situation within the bishoprics of Haarlem and Utrecht, which had a mixed religious population. In the views, insights, and expectations of these priests indications may be detected of a careful open Catholicism that was willing to enter into a dialogue with non-Catholics. The resistance against this document came from the bishopric of Roermond, where, just as in the bishoprics of Brabant, the population was homogeneously Catholic. The intended concept was finally not considered appropriate by the bishops to be used as a pastoral letter. |
