Summary: | The French Revolution has had many consequences. Some of them were deliberately pursued. Others were more or less enforced. This contribution deals with the founding of seminaries in the Netherlands as the unintentional consequence of the revolution. The leaders of the Church who were responsible had preferred to retain the existing educational facilities, but the closing down of the universities of Douai and Louvain as well as the seminaries of the bishopric forced them to look for alternatives. Eventually the preference turned out to be for the district seminaries without any form of state involvement. As far as long-term effects are concerned, this choice had considerable consequences for Church as well as society. |
