Summary: | Describes the developments that occurred between 1896 and 1920 in the Nederlandsche Boerenbond (NBB) and in the associated provincial farmers' unions, with regard to their identity. Inspired by German examples, the founders of the NBB decided upon a generally Christian organization instead of a purely Catholic one. From the start this identity proved controversial. Nevertheless, the leaders of the union made a serious attempt to organize Protestant farmers as well. That this attempt was not sufficiently successful had to do with the fact that Catholics had taken the initiative and that the Catholic clergy had a prominent role within the organization. Episcopal pronouncements favoring purely Catholic organizations and plans for the foundation of a Protestant farmers' union finally led the NBB and the provincial farmers' unions to abandon their pretence of organizing both Catholics and Protestants and to transform themselves into purely Catholic organizations. |
