| Summary: | India, with its multi-ethnicity and tribal complexity exhibits divergence in culture, language and religion. Since the advent of Islam in 8th Century from southern India till its steady flourishing throughout the country, the cachet given to the Sufi saints for the purpose is unparallel. Islamic Mysticism or Tasawwuf teaches of divine spirituality, cosmic harmony, love and humanity that succeeded in providing solace and soothes the critical mind of Man. Though criticism had been received from the orthodox section of Muslim religious heads (Ulema), who condemns Tasawwuf as one of the major sources of inertia and passivity within Muslim societies, yet the discipline had worked remarkably in bringing out inter-religious brotherhood and strengthening intercaste bonds among minority Muslims living in the indigenous Nation. Likewise, the structural practices and the spirit with which Sufi Orders function seems exemplary for the Indian minority-Muslims in order to maintain the integrity and relationships amongst themselves. In this paper, a humble attempt has been made to illustrate how Sufi Movements could serve as a mean for bringing out unity among the Muslim-minority community of India and on the other hand, how they set a platform that creates disunity over certain issues, as well. The paper also illuminates the core reality that Sufi teachings are no way different from the revealed Islamic teachings or neither it is a sub-sect within Islam, rather it is just a path to reach proximity to the Al-Mighty Allah by maintaining a balance over worldly relations and material possessions or considering them as secondary. |
