Summary: | Ten years ago, in a speech I made at my eightieth birthday party, I mentioned that through all my education, from kindergarten to Sydney University, including a four-year stint in a Roman seminary, I could not recall ever having had a really bad teacher. My friend the historian Professor John Molony was struck by this, and urged me to write a book about those teachers. The idea hung around in my head for years, and I thought about it often, but only sat down to it a year or so ago. Now, with the task almost completed, I have begun to realise that it is not really completed at all. The reason is that in writing about those who were formally and officially my teachers, I have come to understand that throughout one's life one learns willy nilly from all sorts of people who are not teachers at all, as well as from events, accidents, the fall of the dice; and that this kind of learning goes on throughout one's life in larger or smaller doses, and can never be said to have ended until death puts an end to it. To document such learning minutely and precisely would be impossible, not to mention boring. On the other hand, some instances of it will have been more or less vitally important in one's development. And it is this consideration that persuades me to trace at least some of the (to me) more notable learning of this kind that has occurred in my life from its beginning. |
