Description
Summary:The following article addresses the activities of the Eastern Orthodox Church in China under Metropolitan Innokenty's (Figurovsky) leadership between 1897 to 1931 with particular focus on the years 1900 to 1917. The primary emphasis of the article is on two incidents and their influence on the development of Eastern Orthodoxy in China: the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 and the Great October Socialist Revolution in Russia in 1917. These two incidents have become the two most important dates marking the era of greatest success in the history of the Russian Orthodox Mission in Beijing. The study also examines the importance of Innokenty (Figurovsky), who was the primary deviser of missionary work of Orthodox Mission in China. One of the goals is to point towards the enormous influence of this man on the development of Orthodox teaching in China. The research methods primarily consist of criticism of historical sources, together with critical analysis of the secondary literature. Information extracted from primary sources is supplemented with a critical selection of data from secondary literature.
