Summary: | This study focuses on the affair of anti-heretical riots in western Germany, 1231-1233, that are often seen as the cradle of image of the so-called luciferian, devil worshipping sect. The study argues that rather than to look for further evidence to strengthen the claim that inquisitor Conrad von Marburg helped to establish such propagandistic narrative during his campaign against heresy in the Rhine area, it is useful to focus on how older traditions on heresy and devil worship were reshapen within the propaganda, while Conrad's persecution served as a background for such reshaping. This study aims at proceeding with the development of arguments already presented by Uwe Brunn towards a deeper understanding of the dynamics of relations between learned traditions on heresy, its inquisitional prosecution, and also the papal anti-heretical diplomacy. |
