Description
Summary:The organization of an alternative catholic party to the Legitimist Party constitutes a problem of historical, sociological, and political scope of great complexity because it involves Church-State relations in a period of confessionalism, the political participation of Catholics, regional or national political representation and conflict, always latent, in the domain of Portuguese political Catholicism. In the 1870s and 1880s, initiatives emerged to organize Catholics around Catholic Associations and a Catholic Union to bring together all Catholics, from legitimists to constitutionalists and liberals. From the 1890s onwards, under the banner of catholic nationalism and a "catholic-political apostolate", were founded Catholic Centers, the Catholic Parliamentary Centre, National Centers, and the Nationalist Party with the aim of defending the traditional prerogatives of their Church.
