Summary: | The purpose of this article is to reflect on Zen Buddhism and its impact on Christian Western modernity through a critical approach, establishing a dialogue with the proposal of José Casanova's thought, of a certain form of modernity and the secularization process observed in individual mysticism. The reflection is oriented and based on texts written by Thomas Merton, José Casanova, and Vattimo. It was verified in this reflection the religious appeal and the attempt to incorporate concepts of Zen Buddhism in the practices of Western monasticism and Catholic Christian spirituality. From these results, one can find ways of understanding the process from an institutional state Christianity to a secular and intimate Christianity. |
