Description
Summary:The most celebrated Brazilian Baroque poet, Gregório de Matos is still mainly studied today in his erotic and satirical facets. Although some of his sacred poems are well known, the religious aspect is often overlooked when his canon is analyzed. A careful reading of this poetry, without preconceptions, however, reveals traits that we identify as an authentic emotioned expression. We propose to move away from approaching Boca do Inferno as a satirist with moments of insincere religious emotion, to see him from the perspective of the harmony of opposites. Poetry thus becomes a form of knowledge of the human being and his emotions and reflections.
