Summary:The doctrine of bay‘ah was introduced by the Prophet (SAW) and had its application in the era of the rightly guided caliphs (khulafā’ al-rāshidūn). From the practices of the first four caliphs, the Muslim jurists (fuqahā’) developed their theories of bay‘ah. Analysing the practices and perspectives of the fuqahā’ provides an in-depth understanding of the nature of bayʿah, its significance in Muslim social and political thought and its evolution over the years.
