| Summary: | Captain Alonso del Campo Lantadilla, born in Burgos, but Chilean by adoption, never forgot his homeland, Burgos. He was aware of the difficulties that most in need orphaned women had in getting married and starting a family due to the impossibility of offering a dowry. That situation occurred equally in American and peninsular territories, but he wanted to make a foundation to marry orphans in the church where he was baptized in 1552, and where his parents and ancestors were buried. Through the documentation kept in the Municipal Archives of the city of Burgos, and the documentation of this foundation kept in the Church of San Esteban, in the Diocesan Archives, we have been able to reconstruct the gears of the foundation. For a little more than two centuries, it benefited 267 women with a dowry that could change the course of their lives. |
