Description
Summary:This article presents the development of a deadeye typology from European-designed vessels using statistical analysis that refines the chronology of the 17th-century transition from a pear-form deadeye to round deadeye. The results suggest that rather than a direct transition, deadeyes underwent intermediate forms while other variables, such as wood grain direction and face profile, changed simultaneously to produce a stronger deadeye. These transitional forms only appeared for a short period (c. 1619–1653) and were not present long enough to be seen in the iconography and ship models that previous scholars had relied on in the absence of archaeological evidence.
