| 520 | |a The aim of this work is to highlight the reactions to the ecclesiastical reforms in Lombardy between the Habsburg and Napoleonic eras on the part of the Lombard bishops and in particular the archbishop of Milan Filippo Maria Visconti, starting with the petition he sent in 1790 to Emperor Leopold ii of Habsburg. It touched on all the main aspects of the Josephine offensive in ecclesiastical matters. On one side was the Emperor of the House of Austria, who agreed to close the general seminary in Pavia, a den of Lombard Jansenism, but not to abrogate the beneficial reform, which was closely linked to the socio-political order as a whole. On the other hand, there was the Lombard episcopate ready to accept Habsburg reforms aimed at the renewal of the Church, such as in the parish sphere, and not others such as the reduction of priestly ordinations that could compromise the spiritual care of the faithful. The Milan prelate’s attitude towards Cisalpine legislation also confirms his image as a fierce opponent of Lombard jurisdictionalism, giving a glimpse, even under the French, of a sort of recovery of the bishop’s pastoral dimension in the face of the harsh attack on the beneficence system by political power. This allows us to better understand the reasons that led him to leave in 1801 to participate in the Lyon rallies and defend the reasons of the Church, a choice which as we know cost him his life. | ||
