Summary:The article addresses the question of female characters in Jesuit theatre. Women appeared among the leading characters in the plays performed, even though a rule of the Ratio studiorum prohibited their presence. Critics noted how Jesuit playwrights in fact ignored the rule; on occasion, too, Jesuits have been criticised as hypocritical for the staging solutions that they found for the problem. This article provides some preliminary observations that seek to explain the apparent discrepancy between theory and practice. On the one hand, it examines the rule that banished women from the Jesuit stage - formulated in the various Ratio, from that of the Roman College to the final version of 1599 and its revision of 1616. On the other hand, the article enlists texts of Jesuit-authored tragedies to explore the ways in which the rule was applied (or not) by a number of important Jesuit playwrights. The study covers a period from 1551 - the year of the foundation of the Roman College - until 1629. In that year, Father Alessandro Donati composed Sueuia Tragoedia, a work that provides an interesting example of application/non-application of the rule. It is hoped that these preliminary findings might open the question further for research in the fields of gender studies, poetry, as well as comparative studies in the history of Jesuit theatre and that of other religious orders, both male and female.
