| Summary: | This paper investigates the role of Scripture in Max Thurian's (1921-1996) The Eucharistic Memorial. In The Eucharistic Memorial, Thurian developed a special combination between biblical theology and liturgical studies, against the background of a wide range of cultural factors. By investigating his use of Scripture, we seek to trace out its specific configurations. As such, we hope to understand how the cultural setting influenced the organization of the scriptural material, what biblical material remained from sight, and what these details tell us about the way Thurian aimed to renew the Eucharistic understanding of his days. We do not merely aim to present the data of Thurian's Scripture use, but to put these data to service for a critical assessment of his approach to the Bible. In a first step, we will offer a quantitative analysis of Thurian's Scripture use, which will in itself already offer several key insights into the configuration of scriptural material. In a second step, we will offer qualitative analyses for a selection of key examples. In a third step, we will analyze the implications of the preceding discussion. The essay will close by offering several conclusions and proposing a number of questions for further study. Cet article étudie le rôle de l'Écriture dans The Eucharistic Memorial de Max Thurian (1921-1996). Dans ce livre, Thurian a développé une combinaison spéciale entre la théologie biblique et les études liturgiques, dans le contexte d'un large éventail de facteurs culturels. En examinant son utilisation de l'Écriture, nous cherchons à en retracer les configurations spécifiques. Ainsi, nous espérons comprendre comment le contexte culturel a influencé l'organisation du matériel scripturaire, quel matériel biblique est resté caché, et ce que ces détails nous disent sur la façon dont Thurian a cherché à renouveler la compréhension eucharistique de son époque. Notre objectif n'est pas seulement de présenter les données relatives à l'utilisation des Écritures par Thurian, mais de mettre ces données au service d'une évaluation critique de son approche de la Bible. Dans un premier temps nous proposerons une analyse quantitative de l'utilisation des Écritures par Thurian, qui offrira déjà en soi plusieurs aperçus clés sur la configuration du matériel scriptural. Dans un deuxième temps, nous proposerons des analyses qualitatives pour une sélection d'exemples clés. Dans un troisième temps, nous analyserons les implications de la discussion précédente. L'essai se terminera par plusieurs conclusions et un certain nombre de questions à approfondir. |
