Description
Summary:In the central chapters of the Encyclical Spe Salvi (2007), Benedict XVI establishes a critical dialogue with modern thought. This article examines the modern idea of progress and the promise of a kingdom of God on earth through a growing mastery of reason and the attainment of perfect freedom. The idea of indefinite progress is analysed, highlighting the ambiguities and paradoxes it generates. The modern mentality has influenced the Christian conception of hope, which has focused too much on the individual, forgetting its social character. It is necessary to recover the true characteristics of Christian hope.
