Summary: | Schnakenburg's commentary on Ephesians and the book by Arnold on power and magic with regard to Ephesians are questioned regarding their respective contributions to the setting and theology of the letter to the Ephesians. It is shown that the letter's context was one where strife between Jews and Gentiles in the Christian communities led the author to the strategy of posing the basic unity of the church as the outcome of God's victory over the opposing powers of evil, implying that disunity would negate the basic statement of faith so that the readers were under the compulsion of utilising God's power to preserve and promote the unity within the one body of Christ. |
