Summary: | The Gospel of John is one of the most studied books in the NT. It has been studied, evaluated and interpreted throughout the ages. We ask, "Can anything more and new be said?" Jerome Neyrey's volume proves that there is more. This monograph has been compiled from 18 previously published essays. Most are fairly recent. The earliest one dates back some 30 years. Hence, this volume consolidates Neyrey's lifelong work of cultural, anthropological and rhetorical research into the Gospel of John. This volume is categorised in the same way as is a textbook, which categorisation facilitates more detailed study than that afforded by a traditional conventional commentary. The outline of the chapters at the beginning of the volume forms a sequential chapter-by-chapter treatment of the Gospel of John (xii-xiii). The aim of these studies by Neyrey was to offer a fresh interpretation of these topics (viii), and he certainly did! This is first-class scholarship, and Neyrey deserves much praise and thanks for his efforts! |
