Summary: | This paper reviews the various suggestions as to the nature of Paul's work according to Acts 18:3, which calls Paul a 'skenopoios'. It is proposed that Paul was involved in the production/manufacture of tents, canopies, and similar goods, and most probably worked for private customers, not the Roman army. Contrary to common opinion, it is not possible to establish exactly which material Paul was working with, although the use of linen - cloth and leather is likely. It is conceivable that Paul used cilicium (goat-hair), but it does not appear to be very likely. It is possible, however, that Paul was working with more than one of these materials. |
