Description
Summary:The goal of this article is to explore how presentations of the historical Jesus contributed to constructions of masculinities in the transformations of politics and power that took place in Europe in the nineteenth century. Parallel to the political transformations initiated by the American and French revolutions, there were also cultural processes that took away symbolic power from monarchy and religion, and invested it in citizenship and nations. The study investigates how presentations of Jesus by Friedrich Schleiermacher, David Friedrich Strauss and George Adam Smith were part of a common cultural and political discourse on nationalism and masculinity.
