| Summary: | Gile Deleuze and Félix Guattari have proposed that the structure of western knowledge can be reconceived according to a 'rhizomatic' model which focuses on the unlimited relations that interconnect all things in the cosmos and on the spaces of dynamic interaction between then. Applied to the field of biblical interpretation, rhizomatic hermeneutics promises to avert the nihilism latent within biblical historical positivism, provide a theoretical framework for exploring the relations between the interpreter and the text, and reintroduce ethics to the practice of biblical interpretation. A 'rhizomatic' model of hermeneutics has the advantage of recognizing the broader ecology within which biblical hermeneutics actually functions, including the subjectivity of the interpreter, and the role of interpreting communities. |
