Summary:This paper considers the meaning of breaking bread in Emmaus in Luke 24 in the light of other occasions in Luke-Acts when bread is broken. Five aspects of the significance of this event are identified and discussed: (1) Breaking the bread as prayer; (2) as an occasion of illumination; (3) particularly concerning the death and resurrection of Jesus; (4) as a means of sustenance through suffering to salvation; (5) as anticipation of the eschatological banquet.
