Description
Summary:This article streamlines the arguments about the opponents in Col 2:16 into three major views. These views are evaluated within the framework of the calendric text of Col 2:16. The calendric elements in Col 2:16 give a most explicit description of the practices of a group to which reference is made. Each of the major views are evaluated with the aim of understanding how they relate to the calendric elements, and the discussion of its relation to this unit of the text in particularly Col 2:16, 17. This article re-examines a position proposed by Moule that there may be more than one opponent in Colossians. It also examines Qumran texts with reference to Colossians. While the focus of the debate on the opponents is on the calendric text (Col 2:16, 17), the overall ritual context of the epistle will be kept in view, especially Col 2:18-23. This article concludes with a view that the understanding of the calendric elements in the context of Col 2:16, 17 and the ritual elements within the epistle, does contribute to a clearer understanding of the opponents. The calendric text therefore becomes a hermeneutical framework within which we may understand the message of the epistle.
