Description
Summary:This paper begins by using Hans-Georg Gadamer and David Bleich as two significant examples of post-structuralist conviction that human subjectivity is formed through the interpretation of texts. The alternative, which the post structuralist view critiques, is the Cartesian notion of the already-complete, all-knowing and all- controlling subject reading to extract what is 'there' in the text. This post- structuralist understanding of subjectivity, the paper argues, mandates a real- reader reader-response criticism.
