His broad but cohesive exposition of various issues relating to the canon of Scripture - its definition, development, composition, and controversies - consists of a Preface, an Introduction, two major Parts (the first with 3 chapters, the second with 5), a Conclusion, an extensive Bibliography (59 pages!), a General Index, and a Scripture Index. Arising from a seminary class on the NT canon, the author seeks to answer "the fundamental question of how we, as Christians, can know that we have the right twenty-seven books in our New Testament" (15, original emphasis), which has been called "the 'Achilles' heel' of Protestant Christianity" (15). Moving from pertinent historical and socio-religious issues, Kruger focuses upon theological concerns and the textual testimony of the NT documents themselves as well as the writings of early Church authorities.
