Summary: | After considering several suggestions by different scholars for solving the eschatological problem found in John 5:25 - 9, another solution is suggested. The phrase entois mnemeiois (v 28) is taken to refer to the people who had died before the incarnation and were therefore physically in their graves when the words in 5:28-9 were spoken. This suggestion has Christological, eschatological and soteriological implications, which are dealt with. The results of this analysis lead to the formulation of a coherent pattern of eschatological events in which both a realized and a futuristic element have their proper and functional places respectively. |
