Summary: | This article integrates the Eastern and Western readings (interpretations) of John 7:37-39 into the Fourth Evangelist's temple fulfilment theme. In the framework of the temple theme, both interpretations support understanding the Spirit as the efflux of the eschatological temple - a cultic role fulfilled by the Johannine Jesus. Each interpretation still holds a distinctive emphasis; the Western reading emphasizes the source while the Eastern reading emphasizes the effect of the Spirit's outpouring. This thesis is supported by connecting elements of the Fourth Gospel with the eschatological setting of the pericope (Feast of Tabernacles) and with the Jewish background of the eschatological temple. These connections cohere well with both readings while recognizing the distinct emphases the interpretive difficulties produce. |
