Summary:Every student of Syrian Asceticism or Monasticism will soon become aware that we are dealing here with a totally different phenomenon than the Asceticism or Monasticism of the West as it is believed to have originated in Egypt. This almost consensus of opinion of the Church historians that the Christian Monasticism and Asceticism originated in Egypt and was transplanted from there throughout the whole Christian world, cannot, therefore, be left unchallenged.
