Summary: | Since the Book of the watchers probably already existed in its present form since the mid-second century BCE it is worthwhile asking what the meaning and function of the book as a whole would be. In terms of form the book consists of three main sections, namely chapters 1-5,6-11 and 12-36. The vision in the last section together with the myth of the watchers in chapters 6-11 functions as an explanation of and a foil to the vision in the first section which prophesies the future judgement of God. Whether the function of the book should be seen as a blessing or a reprimand depends to a great extent on the reader and his context. |
