Description
Summary:Bernard of Auvergne's critiques of the quodlibetal questions of Godfrey of Fontaines and Henry of Ghent, which were probably written between 1300 and 1310, contain several lengthy discussions of papal authority within the Church. These discussions, which are edited here, are of interest because they illustrate mendicant thought on this subject in the decade prior to the major treatments by such theologians as Harvey Nedellec, Peter of La Palu, and William Peter of Godin. Of particular interest is Bernard's discussion of the relation of papal authority to the sacramental power wielded by the Church's other priests and bishops.
