| Summary: | There is evidence that the ecclesial context of Baptist life has a discernible influence on the topics and goals of Baptist biblical scholarship. A major factor in contemporary Baptist life is the cultural shift away from the historic patterns of Christendom toward an increasingly secular age. One Baptist response to this challenge has been a call for theological retrieval of sources from the broader Christian tradition. This essay argues that, to the extent that such retrieval must include retrieval of the resources within Scripture, the post-exilic book of Zechariah is a promising theological resource. Among the benefits that Zechariah provides are: testimony to the experience of transcendence; a model for theological retrieval of received tradition; and resources for a renewed appraisal of Judaism as an essential element of efforts toward greater Christian unity. |
