| Summary: | We begin by recalling elements of the problem facing every editor of the Pensées, and which are borne out clearly by examining Étienne Périer’s preface to the Port-Royal edition. We explain the arguments, at times debatable, yet invariably interesting, which Francis Kaplan uses to challenge, first of all, the order proposed by Filleau de la Chaise (and which Jacques Chevalier and Marcel Guersant follow), and then the order of the two copies (the first followed by Louis Lafuma, the second by Philippe Sellier). Finally, we show that, beyond the question of the plan, it is the question of the meaning of the Pascalian apologetic that is at stake. RésuméAprès avoir rappelé les données du problème auxquelles sont confrontés tous les éditeurs des Pensées, telles qu’elles ressortent d’un examen de la préface d’Étienne Périer à l’édition de Port-Royal, on explique au nom de quels arguments, parfois contestables, mais toujours intéressants, Francis Kaplan récuse, d’abord, l’ordre de Filleau de la Chaise (suivi par Jacques Chevalier et Marcel Guersant), puis l’ordre des deux copies (suivi par Louis Lafuma, pour la première, et par Philippe Sellier, pour la seconde). On montre enfin que, au-delà de la question du plan, c’est la question du sens de l’apologétique pascalienne qui est en jeu. |
