| Summary: | There are three manifestations of the infinite for Descartes: the infinity of God, the infinitude of my will and the indefinite character of both the physical and mathematical world. This article is dedicated to the infinitude of my will, which is to say to the contribution of practical philosophy to the idea of the infinite. In the first section, we examine how man, from a desillusioned stance as to the finite, naturally aspires towards the infinite, that will of infinite being so intimate to the idea of the infinite that it signifies, de facto, an infinite will. The second section shows next how my will is infinite, notably because it bears the paradoxical signs of the infinite, which are positivity and incomprehensibility. Finally, in the third section, the infinitude of my will appears as the mark that God has made me in His own image. This implies that one may not confound the infinity of God and the infinitude of my will. RésuméIl y a trois manifestations de l’infini chez Descartes : l’infinité de Dieu, l’infinitude de ma volonté et l’indéfinité du monde physique et mathématique. Cet article est consacré à l’infinitude de ma volonté, c’est-à-dire à la contribution de la philosophie pratique à l’idée de l’infini. Dans la première partie, on examine comment l’homme, partant d’une déception à l’égard du fini, aspire naturellement vers l’infini, cette volonté d’infini étant si intime à l’idée de l’infini qu’elle signifie de fait volonté infinie. La deuxième partie montre ensuite comment ma volonté est infinie, notamment parce qu’elle en porte les signes paradoxaux (positivité et incompréhensibilité). Enfin, dans une troisième partie, l’infinitude de ma volonté apparaît comme la marque que Dieu m’a fait à son image, ce qui implique de ne pas confondre l’infinité de Dieu et l’infinitude de ma volonté. |
