Summary: | The balance of power (the pope, the emperor, and the bishops) was more an appearance than a reality at Chalcedon. Its definition has, nevertheless, a lasting validity : to prevent the overshadowing of the human reality of Christ, while maintaining that he is “the sole and the same” as the Word. Two profound christologies are here confronted and combined with the vision of the person of Christ developed at Alexandria, expressed clearly by Cyril. Some Easterness rejected the formulation “the two natures consequent upon a union” in favour of “one single nature incarnated by the Word”. “Jacobites” and “Melkites”. Clarification of Constantinople II (533) concerning the notion of hypostasis. Current situation of Chalcedonian christology. |
