| Summary: | Parmi les questions encore ouvertes concernant la condamnation de Galilée, deux méritent une attention particulière: quelle est la nature des pièces du procès que nous connaissons? quelle est la valeur doctrinale de la condamnation à l'abjuration de la doctrine héliocentrique imposée au philosophe toscan par le pape Urbain VIII? L'étude du fonctionnement et de la procédure du Tribunal romain de l'Inquisition, en particulier grâce aux sources désormais accessibles en vertu de la toute récente ouverture des Archives de la Congrégation pour la doctrine de la foi, permet de montrer que le volume conservé aux Archives vaticanes (ASV, Misc., Arm. X, 204) contient les pièces utilisées par le pape Urbain VIII, le 16 juin 1633, pour prononcer le verdict de condamnation de Galilée. Ce verdict applique formellement la censure d'hérésie à la doctrine héliocentrique. Comme il a été prononcé par le juge suprême en matière de foi, qui a voulu qu'il soit connu dans toute l'Église, il acquiert valeur d'acte de magistère. Among the questions remaining open on the subject of Galileo's condemnation, two deserve special attention: 1) what is the nature of the trial documents we possess? 2) what is the doctrinal value of Pope Urban VIII's sentence to abjure the heliocentric doctrine imposed upon the Tuscan philosopher? The study of the working and of the proceedings of the Roman Court of Inquisition, in particular thanks to sources made available in virtue of the very recent opening of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith's archives, shows that the volume conserved in th Vatican archives (ASV, Misc., Arm. X, 204) contains documents used by Pope Urban VIII on 16 June 1633 to bring a sentence of condemnation against Galileo. This sentence formally applies the censure of heresy to the heliocentric doctrine. Since it was delivered by the Supreme Judge in matters of faith, who wished it to be known throughout the Church, its rank is one of an Act of the Magisterium. |
