Traçant l'histoire de cette controverse par l'histoire de la distinction formelle chez les scotistes du XlVe et XVe siècles, je présume que la conception de la distinction formelle, chez la plupart des membres de l'école scotiste, comme distinction intermédiaire (et non comme distinction réelle) a engendré des confusions dans l'école en ce qui concerne le rôle épistémologique de la distinction formelle, a exposé la doctrine de la distinction formelle à la critique d'Ockham et d'autres philosophies médiévales, et enfin a amené au rejet de la distinction formelle par Leibniz Beginning with a study of Determinatio 14 of William of Anlwick, this contribution casts light upon a controversy among the immediate disciples of Duns Scqtus, namely, whether to understand the formal distinction as a type of real distinction. Tracing the history of this controversy through the history of the formal distinction among the Scotists of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, I suggest that the conception of the formal distinction by the majority of the Scotists as an intermediary distinction and not as a real distinction caused considerable confusion within Scotism regarding the epistemological role of the formal distinction, esposed the doctrine of the formal distinction to the critique of Ockham and other medieval philosopher, and ultimately led to the rejection of the formal distinction by Leibniz |
