Plus exactement, il s'agissait de dégager les « connexions » entre cette pensée théologique et les autres faits sociaux contemporains. Ainsi la rupture des liens de dépendance féodale invite-t-elle à penser la constitution de l'individu comme être autonome. L'effort du P. Chenu pour comprendre son temps le rend attentif à cette constante perméabilité du présent et du passé. Elle le conduit même à une forme d'assimilation de soi à son maître Thomas d'Aquin. Theology let Fr. Chenu to becoming a historian – more precisely, a medieval scholar – which is how he was able to read Aquinas in context and to apply « Fr. Lagrange's historical method » to Aquinas. That is, it became a question of outlining the « connexions » between that theological thinking and the other social conditions of the time. Thus, the interruption of feudal bonds of dependency suggests considering the constitution of the individual as an autonomous person. Fr. Chenu's efforts to understand his century keep him aware of this constant permeability of past and present which in turn leads him even to a form of assimilation of self to his master Thomas Aquinas. | ||
