| Summary: | Pascal s'oppose à deux figures contemporaines de la prétention à l'universel, toutes deux constitutives d'une morale « humaniste » : d'une part le faux universel (néo-) stoïcien, de l'autre un universel immanent chez Charron. Dans l'écart entre la pluralité des moeurs particulières et l'universalité vide d'une pure fonction, la morale se découvre sans principe, lieu de la confusion et du relativisme. Par opposition à ce mauvais universel qui caractérise la morale, Pascal invite à penser un « bien universel », dont on ne dispose pas, mais qu'il s'agit de reconnaître et d'aimer en soi — c'est la tâche de la christologie. Pascal was opposed to two claims made in his lime as to the nature of the universal in « humanist » morality: one was the false (New) Stoic universal, and the other was Charron's immanent universal. Between the features common to particular customs on the one hand, and the empty universality of a pure function on the other, morality finds itself in a state of confusion and relativism, lacking any absolute principle. As distinct from these false universals characterising morality, Pascal suggests imagining a "universal good" which one can't dispose but ought to recognise and admire in it self — which is the aim of Christology. |
