Deux éditions récentes, que la Note présente et analyse l'une après l'autre, permettent de le vérifier, l'Ars predicandi de Thomas de Chobham, qu'on peut dater entre 1216 et 1222, et les Sermons aux clercs et aux simples gens à Paris de Ranulphe de la Houblonnière, prononcés vers 1272-1283. Ils nous renseignent sur les rapports entre le prédicateur et ses auditeurs, sur les espèces de la prédication, sa matière, les sujets de sermons, l'art de prêcher. Leur lecture permet de deviner quelque chose de la mentalité des laïcs à cette époque. Preaching in the 13th century was by no means confined to the mendicant orders: the diocesan clergy took its part in the great catechetical effort that characterises that century. Two recent releases, that the Note presents and analyses one by one, allow verification of this: the Ars predicandi of Thomas of Chobham, which can be dated between 1210 and 1222, and the Sermons to the clergy and to the ordinary people of Paris of Ranulf of Houblonniere delivered ca. 1272-1283. They leach us about the relations between the preacher and his listeners, about the different kinds of preaching, their material, the subjects of sermons, and the art of preaching. Reading them allows one to surmise something of the mentality of the laity during that period. |
