| Summary: | Mettant en doute une influence du manichéisme sur le 'De pulchro et apto' d'Augustin, l'A. confronte la réflexion augustinienne sur la convenance du tout et la convenance de la partie, i.e. le pulchrum et l'aptum, à l'Hippias Majeur et à certains textes cicéroniens de coloration stoïcienne. Il étudie les nombreuses réapparitions du thème au long de l'œuvre postérieure d'Augustin lui-même, et montre qu'il ne se confond pas avec l'opposition beauutile, telle qu'elle apparaît chez Ar islote ou, plus tard, chez Isidore de Séville. Throwing doubt on the existence of any Manichean influence in Augustine's 'De pulchro et apto', the writer compares the Augustinian idea of the utility of the whole and the utility of the part, i.e. the pulchrum and the aptum, with the Hippias Major and with certain Ciceronian texts coloured by Stoicism. He studies the many reappearances of this theme in Augustine's later work, and shows that it is not to be confused with the notion of beauty versus utility found in the work of Aristotle, and later in that of Isidore of Seville. |
