Après avoir distingué entre sens simple, sens vrai et vérité, Meyer, loin d'éclairer le sens de l'Écriture, réduit le texte sacré à une propédeutique à la démarche philosophique, laquelle est ainsi à la fois présupposée et provoquée par la lecture de la Bible. Mais les dernières pages annoncent un programme philosophique très proche du projet spinoziste élaboré dans le Court Traité. "Philosophy Interprets the Holy Scriptures", by Louis Meyer, which appeared in 1666, attempts to apply Cartesian methodology to the interpretation of holy scripture, but the realisation of this aim soon frustrates the original intention. After distinguishing among simple meaning, true meaning and truth, Meyer, far from clarifying scripture, reduces the sacred text to a mere rudimentary element in his philosophical argument, which is thus both instigated and encouraged by the reading of the Bible. But the closing pages propose a philosophical programme very similar to the Spinozian one formulated in the Short Treatise. |
